dung

I am but a piece of dung,
among thousands,
among trillions,
among BILLIONS,
of tons of precious diamonds in this universe,
I am worthless,
the world tells me,
IT SCREAMS TO ME,
that I am nothing more than a primitive invention of accident,
but the LORD OF CREATION whispers to me,
you exist,
as do I,
do not forsake me my child,
and I will not forsake you,
for you are never forgotten,
but remembered,
as are precious diamonds and pearls,
but do not ever forget,
the immense price that I have paid,
what right have ou to complain over petty grievances?
I SUFFERED THE CROSS AND DEATH ITSELF.
AND I HAVE CONQUERED satan THE accuser AND THE demon.
HE IS BUT DUST UNDER MY HEEL,
but you my child,
are more precious than diamonds in the desert,
and I love you, always.

people pleaser

There is an old fable that has been passed down for generations that tells about an elderly man who was traveling with a boy and a donkey. As they walked through a village, the man was leading the donkey and the boy was walking behind. The townspeople said the old man was a fool for not riding, so to please them he climbed up on the animal’s back.

When they came to the next village, the people said the old man was cruel to let the child walk while he enjoyed the ride. So, to please them, he got off and set the boy on the animal’s back and continued on his way.

In the third village, people accused the child of being lazy for making the old man walk, and the suggestion was made that they both ride. So the man climbed on and they set off again.

In the fourth village, the townspeople were indignant at the cruelty to the donkey because he was made to carry two people. The frustrated man was last seen carrying the donkey down the road.

The Point: We can’t please everybody, and if we try we end up carrying a heavy burden. When we try to do everything other believers want us to do, we can easily become frustrated and confused . That’s why we need to remember that the One we must please above all others is Jesus Christ. Carried any donkeys lately?

belly dancer for hire

In Memory of Grandma.

As a few of you know my late grandma, Joan Rothe, was a dancer. She could twirl a baton, do the polka, and wax any wedding reception with her grooves. And of course, who can forget grandma’s sweet skills in belly dancing or as she would tell us grandkids, “middle eastern dancing”. Ah yes, those were the days…watching grandma wiggle her hips on stage, balancing that sword on her head with a dozen other grandmas. It would make most young boys squimish, but for me, I was proud. I mean, who can brag on their grandma’s belly dancing skills? It made for a great show and tell in elementary school!?

In deed, I did inherit my grandmothers genes. I may not have the hips, but I do have the famed belly roll. The past few nights I have been honing my practice of belly dancing by watching instructional videos gifted to my by Amy and Charity who admittedly see potential in my future of male belly dancing. I know some of you may laugh, but if you are ever in need of a belly dancer I will soon be on the market. I could perform for your kids birthday parties, church potlucks or holiday business parties. I dont cost much, but I will promise you a good show.

In all seriousness, thanks grandma…
for loving on me like a mother,
for your patience with my kid-ish spells,
for the weekend rides to great grandma Stella’s,
for trying to cook and laughing about the mistakes,
for being a clean-aholic,
for your willingness to see the world and travel and share your adventures,
for demonstrating to me unbiased compassion,
for always having a fun and giving personality,
for never complaining even in the mist of deadly cancer,
and for instilling within me a desire to dance.

love

Today is the famed day of love. Valentines Day. I cannot help but think of the One who created and defined “love”.

I read somewhere that the words to this song were penciled on the wall of a narrow room in an asylum by a man who supposedly was demented, and they were discovered after his death. He was not demented at all. He had learned one of the most precious truths of all time, that God’s love is infinite. We can no more exhaust it than we can empty the ocean with a bucket. And we are invited to keep drawing from His inexhaustible supply. To do so will enable us to keep extending love to those around us even when our love is not returned.

F. M. Lehman, The Love of God, 1917

  1. The love of God is greater farThan tongue or pen can ever tell;It goes beyond the highest star,And reaches to the lowest hell; The guilty pair, bowed down with care,God gave His Son to win;His erring child He reconciled,And pardoned from his sin.
    • Refrain:Oh, love of God, how rich and pure! How measureless and strong! It shall forevermore endure—The saints’ and angels’ song.
  2. When hoary time shall pass away,And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,When men who here refuse to pray,On rocks and hills and mountains call,God’s love so sure, shall still endure,All measureless and strong;Redeeming grace to Adam’s race—The saints’ and angels’ song.
  3. Could we with ink the ocean fill,And were the skies of parchment made,Were every stalk on earth a quill,And every man a scribe by trade; To write the love of God aboveWould drain the ocean dry;Nor could the scroll contain the whole,Though stretched from sky to sky.

2.      God’s Word Never Changes

Lesson from Ezekiel on God and Change
Ezekiel 36:25-29

Theme“the Knowledge and Glory of God”
Key Phrase“this is what the Sovereign LORD says” (210X’s)
Background: God just judged Israel for sin, but now is promising both present and future restoration (vs.23-24). This particular restoration is of the New Covenant. The Problem in this context is the sin of worshipping idols. God is making a way for man to change his problem of sin.

1.      A person cannot change what is wrong on the outside until they first change what is inside.(v.25)
a.     Fact: Change of heart is to happen before idols are removed.
b.     Fact: If I don’t change the heart (internal), I don’t change the problem (external).
c.      Fact: Promises to change are worthless, unless there are priorities that change first.

2.      A person cannot change what is wrong on the inside without God changing them. (v.26a)
a.     Fact: Real change in your life can only come from God.
b.     Fact: God is the one doing the work of change, all I do is allow Him change me.
c.      Fact: Your change will not last if it’s done in your own effort.

3.      When God changes a heart, it becomes more aware that it is not the only one with needs and problems (v.26b)
a.     Fact: There are people with equal or great problems than me.
b.     Fact: When your problem seems big, it is probably because you are focusing too much on your own problem.
c.      Fact: When I help other people with their problems my problems look smaller.
d.     Fact: When you help others problems it helps your problem.

4.      When God changes a heart, it becomes more sensitive as to how God wants them to live.(v.27)
a.     Fact: When God works on my heart I become more aware of how He wants me to live my life.
b.     Fact: When I become dull as to how to live my life, it is evident I have not allowed God to work on my heart in a while.

5.      When God changes a heart, God shifts ones attention from dealing with problems to building a relationship with the Father. (v.28)
a.     Fact: God does not focus on the negative (sin-idol worship), He focuses on the positive (a relationship with Him).
b.     Fact: Focus on the Father, the problem will become blurry and fade.
c.      Fact: All things fall into place when God is at the center.

6.      When God changes a heart, the success of the problem is in Gods hand and work, not mine.(v.29a)
a.     Fact: Your change will not last if it’s done in your own effort.
b.  Fact: Change in my life is more dependent on God, than it is dependent upon me.

memorial tears

Memorial Tears

I possess a tear; it is one of many.
Added to oceans of tears in memory.
Looking deep within, reflecting off the surface,
I see what is inside floating, and ponder.

Of all remembrances is the foregoing sin
Causing agony from within to without.
I deserve the furthest destructive damnation,
In relation to my foolishness and shame.

Yet I stumble in and drown in the shadowy depths;
I was miraculously saved and placed upright.
Breathed in with new life, without strife
Engrossed in the creation of all that is.

Talk of no fairytale in paradise lost,
But obligation to worship and adorn thy name.
Swimming in the vast tears of memory
And gather together the heart of my present being.

Am I frozen? Or too cold and unbearable?
I am compelled to stoke the fire to boil a pleasing aroma.
Professing to confess out to the outstretched arm
Wanting security from the memory of tears.

1,000 Tongues

Have you ever had an amazing time of worship while driving in the car, standing in the shower or mowing the lawn? I love finding the unique and simple ways to worship God. I had one of those moment today while cleaning my house. Crazy, I know, especially when I despise dusting, mopping and doing the dishes.

I cranked my Passion ’06 CD and scrubbed-scrubbed-scrubbed all the while belting out praises. I wish I could sing. Someday I will sound like Josh Groban!?

Anyways, the CD ran out of tracks. It didnt loop so I started singing songs off the top of my head that I knew enough from memory like…All in All, You Are Holy, Famous One, It Is Well, etc. But one song made me think…O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing.

This is a standard hymn written by the ol’ Charles Wesley. I sang this a gajillion times in church growing up. There is nothing impressive about the number 1,000. I mean a thousand is not that big. I have been in churches where there have been a few thousand singing. Sure its awesome, but nothing compared to the millions and millions of voices before the throne of heaven. So I did a little research on the song with the help of modern day worshipper Matt Redman.

The phrase, “O for a thousand tongues to sing” doesn’t refer to 1,000 individual singers, but A SINGER who desires to have 1,000 tongues to sing praises to his redeemer. Wow, this truth has given a whole new meaning to this song for me.

“Hear Him, you deaf; His praise you dumb, your lossened tongues employ;
You blind behond your Savior come, and leap you lame, for joy!”

My King, Do You Know Him?

My King, Do You Know Him?
By Dr S.M. Lockridge

The Bible says my King is a seven way King. He’s the King of the Jews – that’s a racial King; He’s the King of Israel – that’s a national King; He’s the King of Righteousness, He’s the King of the ages, He’s the King of Heaven, He’s the King of Glory, He’s the King of Kings and He’s the Lord of Lords!

He’s my King, I wonder – do you know Him?

David said the Heaven’s declare the glory of God and the firmament shows His handiwork. My King is a sovereign King. No means of measure can define His limitless love, no far seeing telescope can bring into visibility the coastline of His shore-less supply, no barrier can hinder Him from pouring out His blessings He’s enduringly strong, He’s entirely sincere, He’s eternally steadfast, He’s immortally graceful, He’s imperially powerful, He’s impartially merciful.

Do you know Him?

He’s the greatest phenomenon that has ever crossed the horizon of this world! He’s God’s son, He’s the sinners Savior, He’s the centerpiece of civilization, He stands in the solitude of Himself, He’s august and He’s unique! He’s unparalleled, He’s unprecedented, He’s the loftiest idea in literature, He’s the highest personality in philosophy, He’s the supreme problem in higher criticism, He’s the fundamental doctrine of true theology, He’s the miracle of the age, He is – yes He is, He is the superlative of everything good that you choose to call Him, He’s the only one who qualified to be an all sufficient Savior;

Do you know Him?

He supplies strength for the weak, He’s available for the tempted and the tried, He sympathizes and He saves, He strengthens and sustains, He guards and He guides, He heals the sick, He cleansed the lepers, He forgives sinners, He discharges debtors, He delivers the captives, He defends the feeble, He blesses the young, He serves the unfortunate, He regards the aged,  He rewards the diligent and He beautifies the meek.

Do you know Him?

My King is the key to knowledge: The wellspring of wisdom; the doorway of deliverance; the pathway of peace; the roadway of righteousness; the highway of holiness, and the gateway of glory!

His office is manifold: His promise is sure. His light is matchless. His goodness is limitless. His mercy is everlasting. His reign is Righteous. His yoke is easy, and His burden is light.

I wish I could describe Him for you, but He’s indescribable! He’s Incomprehensible! He’s invincible! He’s Irresistible! You can’t get Him out of your mind or off your hands! You can’t out-live Him and you can’t live without Him! The Pharisees couldn’t stand Him, but they found out they couldn’t stop Him. Pilate couldn’t find any fault in Him. The witnesses couldn’t agree. Herod couldn’t kill Him. Death couldn’t handle Him, and the grave couldn’t hold Him!

That’s my King, That’s my King, That’s my King, and He’s the kingdom and the power and the glory – Forever! AMEN!!!

it was all new to me

Who would have thought that this kid would have ever amounted to anything? He grew up in the “normal dysfunctional American home”. Lived with his grandparents while his mother work two jobs to financially support him. In his elementary years he was forced into a special classroom for students with attention deficits, and after school he would see a local psychologist because of his anger problems. This kid was mentally and spiritually messed up.

The only spirituality he knew of was growing up in the Roman Catholic Church his family had always attended. He was baptized as a baby, had his first communion and going through the motions of ritualistic worship week after week. He knew what to expect. And even with all this problems he thought to himself, “I’m okay.”

Until…his mother met a new man. He was unlike the other boyfriends she brought home. Mike was his name and he was a Christian. Mike’s church background was Charismatic, but like the boys mother was very unsatisfied with his church. Together after getting married they made a move to a smaller community north of Milwaukee, WI. This new family of three started a new life in their new surroundings. They visited a new church that would meet their spiritual needs, an independant-funamental-Bible-preaching-church. This certainly was a new thing for this boy, but he liked it. They opened the Bible and the people stayed to talk after church was over!

He soon made new friends at his school and church. He was opted out of needed special help because of so-called problems. His future was looking a little brighter. However, in Junior High School he made a few friends that became a negative influence on him. Again, his problems got him into trouble.

As his family continued to go to church, he noticed the makeup of his home beginning to change. His mother didn’t do the same things she did in the past, she talked differently and she began hanging up religious pictures on the walls of their home. He asked his mother, “why all the changes?” She responded, “Because Jesus has come into my heart, and has made me a new person.” The conversation ended there. But her words stuck in his head like sharp tack.

It was no later after that conversation with his mother that the pastor gave a strong message of the realities of hell. This boy who had the I-can-do-what-I-want-because-it-will-not-affect-me attitude, suddenly realize he wasn’t okay. He needed help. He needed forgiveness of sin. He needed to know for sure that he has okay, and going to heaven. On that hot summer night long after the church doors closed he laid in his bed pondering his own pride. He cries out to the Lord, “Father forgive me. I dont want to go to hell. I need Jesus. Help me to live like Him.” From this day on this boys life looked a lot brighter.

He was a new creation in Christ. He soon made new godly friends, started attending the churches youth group, and had a desire to be more like Christ. That desire turned into a reality as godly men discipled and led him through the Word of God. They challenged his mind to consider going into the ministry and they opened up for him opportunities to serve in his local church.

Who would have thought that this problematic, attention crazed kid would have graduated from Bible College, heading into the world to serve Christ?

This is the testimony of MY life and salvation.

He can do…

God is incredably awesome. So much bigger than anything or anyone. I really needed to hear this today…”Anything GOD has ever done, HE can do now. Anything GOD had ever done anywhere, HE can do here. Anything GOD has ever done for anyone, HE can do for you.” – A.W. TozerOh, how I give up so easily and too quickly. “Ye of little faith” can be my motto. Sad, but true. May your prayer for me be this week to be an I CAN DO person because HE CAN DO.

My Adventures with Flat Stanley

flat-stanley-at-desk.jpg A few weeks ago I got a letter from my little siter Olivia. She is 6 and enjoying her second semester of kindergarden. The letter included a message from Flat Stanely, a book they read in class. I was to journal and send back a day in my life with Flat…I had a great day with Flat Stanley. I am so glad to have met this new friend.

In the morning, Flat and I went to the bank in West Lafayette. On our way we passed through Purdue University campus where about 40,000 students study mostly farming and engineering. It is a really big place. Many famous people studied here like Neil Armstrong and Amelia Earhart. Of course, I didn’t go to Purdue, but graduated from a college in West Virginia a few years ago.

After going to the bank we drove to my office. On our way to the office we drove through Prophetstown. This is a very historical town where the Battle of Tippecanoe took place in 1811. General William Henry Harrison fought against a group of Indians led by Tecumseh and his brother the Prophet. Many people lost their lives there. Today there is a really neat museum and park to visit.

flat-stanley-being-counselled.jpgThe town next to Prophetstown is Battle Ground, which is where I live and work. I work at Battle Ground Bible Church. I am the assistant pastor and youth director of the church. I teach, counsel and plan a lot of events for our teenagers. We just got back from  our Winter Retreat last weekend, even though there was no snow it was a blast. It is a lot of fun to meet with teenagers everyday. Like today we met  Will and Joe. During the day Flat helped me answer the phone, check emails and prepare for the week. We got a lot done and Flat was a good boy!
